The Final Nebula Ballot

At last, I can share my news!

I am very happy (and shocked) to announce that my short story "An End To All Things," published last summer in the anthology Children of Magic, has been nominated for a Nebula award!!

No, really. I'm serious. I can't believe it either -- but look, here's the official ballot! With my name!

"An End To All Things" was added by the Nebula short fiction jury. According to the Nebula FAQ, "The jury exists for the purpose of detecting outstanding work that might otherwise fall through the cracks. ... Every year, they have the option of adding one work in each category to the final Nebula ballot -- especially works that might not normally be seen by most members."

Upon hearing this news, I:

1. Nearly fell out of my chair. I mean this quite literally.

2. Laughed hysterically. My parents, with whom I was talking on the phone at the time, were equally shocked. And, as SF readers (and my parents!), they were just as ridiculously excited.

3. Sent Diane Turnshek an email to ask if she was really sure that I was there. (I meant to send it just to Diane, anyway. The entire Alpha list received it instead.) But really, of everyone, I think Diane would be fairly certain of such things.

4. Left Sarah a very odd voicemail.

5. Managed to type well enough to tell Sarah to answer her phone already, stuttered out my news, and proceeded to laugh with her for about the next ten minutes. Just saying "NEBULA!" was enough to make one or both of us collapse in helpless giggles.

It took me a long time to stop shaking. Like, about two hours. Realizing that I was never going to get to sleep, I made a cup of Tazo Calm tea, listened to a whole lot of music (Coheed is calming), and grinned into the wee hours of the morning.

I'll be honest: I'm still having trouble processing this. How on earth can I be a Nebula nominee??

Really, I have no idea. But that's not stopping me from grinning like a mad fool.

I think I can hear something . . . wait, let me check . . . yes, I do believe that is the sound of you rocking the house, audible all the way down here in Indiana. <g>

I'm so glad I called rather than waiting four hours to hear this.

I mean that quite seriously.

I'm very glad you called, too!! And you had excellent timing -- you called during the two minute window when I actually had a chance of hearing my phone, between trudging down the snowy street with my head down, and abandoning my bag in Sarah's hallway. And I got to talk to Timprov!!

Yay! I'm a couple steps further away from you than many others here, but we're sort of connected by a few different people (small world thing). *I'm* grinning like an idiot because awesome, and wonderful, and all sorts of good adjectives.

Bryn is right; the house rocking made it across the Mississippi. Whoohoo!

And thanks! *hugs*

CONGRATULATIONS! That's fantastic news (and very well-deserved). Have you decided yet what you're going to wear to the awards ceremony? :)
Feb. 27th, 2007 11:43 am (UTC)
Funny you should ask this. That's what first made me take notice of Karina--pictures of the "best skirt ever" she wore at an sf function. Actually it was (her words) "the long-awaited launch of Mythspring: From the Lyrics and Legends of Canada, held at the Merril Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy at the Lillian H. Smith library downtown." And the best boots, too. (Photos) And then I caught sight of her jewelry and I was gone. A true fan. Now I hear this stuff about her writing and I'm all confused. How can she have ALL those talents. It's mind-boggling!

Pictures of what others have worn to the Nebula Awards Ceremony can be found on Keith Stokes' Mid-American Fan Photo Archive here.

Karina, I can't believe I got to be the first to tell you the news--I feel privileged! You are amazing!

Absolutely Fantastic! Congratulations! Of course you're going to the ceremony, right?

In the meantime I'll buy you drinks Saturday.

Thanks, Mark!

And of course I have to go to the ceremony. It'll be expensive, and I'll be a total basketcase, and I have no illusions about actually *winning* -- but there's no way I can miss that! And hey, what do you bet that there'll be a really awesome Nebula Losers party? ;)
